This bangle is made in Stockholm Sweden in 1954. It is marked "handwork" and makersmark. It also has the Swedish silver stamp. There are three applegreen stones with a large one in the middle. I believe that the stones might be Chrysoprase. This piece surprised me when I first saw it, it doesn´t look Swedish. It has some folklore to it and I find it to be a bit like a revolt against the modern. I usualy like more simple, finer lines but sometimes it's nice to be a little wild and crazy, like the silversmith demonstrated here.

I have a lot of work ahead of me, oxidation has a whole new meaning to me now. In the third photo from the left I´ve managed to get some of it off. It needs more work but underneath there is a beauty waiting to be reviled, I think. I hope you can see it too :-)

I also agree with you I prefer the more simple style myself but this is just border line from that & has a lot of appeal.

I really like this bangle! In response to your comment about my ring: I couldn’t agree more with you about it “not looking Swedish”. I guess we all have our stereotypes about what we believe something is supposed to look like. I have seen so many pieces of Swedish jewelry and not one looked even close to this one. To me, your bangle, as well as my ring, has a touch of folk art/style – if you know what I mean. Agram.m used the word “peasant” to describe it. I don’t know much about art styles and history but agree with you that artists, in this case silversmiths, are inspired and influenced by one another, no matter where they live.

Thankyou for your nice coment. I live in Sweden and have never seen anything like it here, but I mean I like surprices like this, having my stereotypes proven wrong. I polished the bangel yesterday but I took it to a jeweller today and they will clean it for me. He thought the stones really could be chrysoprase.

    Your ring is lovely!!

It is beautiful. I am sure you will enjoy it a lot, even more after it is cleaned professionally. I live in Canada and it is hard here to find nice pieces like that. Of course there is always the option to pay a lot of money in an antique store, but that takes the fun out of collecting.

I agree with you that that would take the fun out of it. I don't have a big budget for this interest and I didn't pay a lot for it. That makes it even more fun :-). I think it helped me that it was so awful looking and dark on the surface :-). Nice to talk to you Gudrun! Hope to talk some more another time. I like your posts and will look into them more in the future. Take care. /Elisabeth

Thanks idcloisonne! Unfortunately this is where it's still dirty. I have another post after I had it cleaned. Yes it's made by a professional, I have seen other superb pieces by him. But he got the influence from somewhere in the past.
I've never heard the slave word with your type of jewelry, that word probably wouldn't pop up here, we would refer to something else I think, but I haven't heard anything like that. They are too beautiful to make you think of horrible things like that.
  32. Elisabethan Elisabethan, 3 years ago
Yes I know that, all countries and cultures have their dark ages, that's not what I was trying to say. I was just thinking of our vocabulary and had the feeling that if we would have had a term for the bangles like that, probably the word that would have poped up would be something like 'handcuffs'. But yes, words used and not used might reflects something about our history I'm sure. To analys deeper what and how I think I need more writing space than this forum allows. That wasn't my intention, just thought out loud if I had come across a similar term here to what you said.
I agree with what you said about internet, it's not always trustworthy. It can help you to find leads to work on but the sources needs to be valued.
