As the Commander of the local American Legion Post, I got an interesting call recently.

Our local thrift shop owner received these three flags in in a big box of donations, and she said she just felt it was very wrong – disrespectful I think - to have something like this up on the shelf for sale. Instead she called my number and gave them to us.

Each of these cases contains a 5’ by 9 ½’ American Flag. This is the size used for draping servicemen’s and veteran’s caskets. Although there are other reasons to have a cased and folded flag, I think funeral flags are the most likely to be treated in this manner. The one with the medals appears to have belonged to a WWII veteran; the medals being WWII Victory, WWII American Theater, and WWII Asiatic Pacific Theater.

Because the flags are in like-new condition, I can bring them to the local National Cemetery where they will be reused for funeral services. I’m not sure what I’ll do with the cases or medals.

Could you back track and get the original owners name?

No, unfortunately these were in a donation bin, so no Idea who put them there.

I also opened the cases, hoping there might be some paper or writing on the back inside of the case, but none.
