The Union Pacific Steam Locomotive No. 844 was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific and was delivered in 1944. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such renowned trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger Trains. The engine has been hailed as Union Pacific's "Living Legend."
No. 844 represents the pinnacle of "modern" steam power. It can and has exceeded 100 miles per hour, and regularly cruised at 80 to 90 miles per hour in normal passenger service.
I had a chance to visit the 844 a few years ago and here are a few photos.
