    This was removed from my wife's parent's home when it was sold. The house was built in 1930. In those days the USPS delivered mail to your door and picked up letters that were held by the spring loop. Top lid is open. It was mounted right by the door.

      That certainly doesn't have a warning label: Made in China. Solid, that.
