Today I purchased a 14" x 26" reproduction sign that brings back fond memories of the series LONESOME DOVE. Robert Duvall had long been on my top 10 favorite actors list just 1 notch below John Wayne. Duvall's portrayal of Augustus McCrae moved him up a notch ahead of Wayne. I was blown away by the range of his acting (or was he acting?). His tenderness with Lorena and Clara portrayed the true nature of a Texan and their respect for women. Unfortunately that same respect is not taught enough anymore.

I found the books to be a bit odd, but I did like both them and the movie(s?); been a long time since I read or saw them.

Charlie don't surf. Duvall in apocalypse now and Godfather are some of my favourite movies by him.

Thank You Guys for your comments. I imagine Robert Duvall has a huge fan club.
Google Robert Duvall and you can learn a lot about the mini-series/movie.

Robert Duvall is 100 notches above John Wayne. Everything he does is excellent. John Wayne hated horses! He was just in the right place right time. But to be fair, they were actors popular for their time, loved in the movies and by fans - doing their best. I love John Wayne in True Grit! What a great movie!! I love the new one too by the Coen Brothers. I watched both of them back to back and have to say - that's the way to watch True Grit.

Lonesome Dove was great. I like the AMC movie he did. I think it is called Free Range.

You are so right, Duvall's range was incredible, back from his early days on Twilight Zone in "The Miniatures" to all his fine films, he could even do accents well (the film about tango dancing), just a wonderful actor to have in your top ten

This is my favorite novel and movie, by far! Pulitzer Prize winner ya know. Gus is my hero.
The scene where Lorena stands outside by his coffin all night (poor Dish) is one of the most heartbreaking in the movie, and there were plenty. I've read nearly all McMurtry's novels, but the Lonesome Dove series, Dead Man's Walk, Lonesome Dove, Streets of Laredo, along with Comanche Moon. McMurtry is a writing genius. He brought some of the most horrific villains to paper...Blue Duck, (worst half-breed)Mox Mox ( the man burner) , Ahumado (the skinner) to name a few. Ok, I'll stop.
      Thanks for the GREAT POST!!

And, of course Duvall was Boo Radley.

      Wow! Mary...
I didn't know he played Boo in To Kill A Mockingbird!
Didn't think he was that old, I'm telling ya, I learn something all the time on CW...
And no, I haven't seen those movies, but you can bet I'll look for them!
      Thank you my friend :)

Revisiting Gus sitting on the porch, drinking while everyone else was working. I love when he throws his pigs a snake to eat. Very loyal pigs, followed him all the way to Montana! Ha!
