This old hammer has raised letters to either side reading "Coal hammer". It is a household tool for breaking up large lumps of coal into more manageable pieces.

My house was built in 1883 and originally had a coal fired furnace. The coal room was cleaned up and a cement floor put in, coal chute turned into a window, etc., but I found enough coal in the crawl space to fill a large jar which will go with the house when I sell it. I am certain the folks who lived here during that time probably had tool for this purpose.
