Interestingly this hand made box has a sticker on the base that states "Design by Itoko Iwata". I am quite sure it was made in the Iwata Studio but of course the studio employed other glass makers and the possibility is that Itoko did not make this box.
The base is made from a layer of white glass cased in clear that appears to have been moulded. There is no machining on the base or lip so good glass skills have been used to finish the box well.
The lid has been made from a red layer of glass with gold leaf pieces, cased in clear and probably moulded to shape. Again there is no polishing on the flats or edges yet it fits the base snugly and with little rattle.
It was possibly made as a cigarette case but I think it's 20thC when even in Japan cigarette use was becoming less, so maybe it's just a general purpose box.
It's about 13cm x 10cm x5cm.
Absolutely lovely glass box that appears encased in ice, with such a gorgeous red and gold lid, I love it!
Classy useful beautiful !!!
Thanks Jenny for your lovely icy comment!
Ta Kevin.
It took me a while to warm up to this one, but now I really like it, Karen. It took a few viewings. Very cool design, regardless of what its intended use was.
I get it Kevin, the photos don’t show it well. Even when I bought it I was unsure but very happy when it turned up.
Thanks for the love.
Thanks Eileen, it is going to be used as a catch all for brooches I have worn but am yet to put away.
Useful and beautiful as you said :)
