This 2" goldtone brooch has a black enamel horse's head with flowing golden mane inside a pearly textured green enamel horseshoe. From England's Sphinx with cartouche mark on reverse, ca 1960s

Very nice brooch, very deep beautiful green and gorgeous black horse! He's so noble and proud looking, very reminiscent of Black Beauty. I think he's won the grand national or something looking so proud like that! :)

Thank you Lauren for your fabulous praise & comparison to Black Beauty, yes that's so true, I loved both the book & movie as a girl. With his nostrils flaring I could easily imagine he's run a hard race at the Grand National & all that's missing around the horseshoe is his wreath of winner flowers!
Karen I'm really glad you enjoyed the enameling as well, it's really nice with the pearly green horseshoe - I've always loved horses (used to ride), and some of my family members were fond of going to the racetrack on occasion; I went a couple times and it was a thrill to have breakfast near the paddock where the beautiful thoroughbreds exercised.
