This was purchased by my dad at an auction in Kansas in the 1960's. It shows a monk making wine. It was discovered in 1970 that this chair was like similar one in Oberlin, Kansas. The other chair shows two renaissance period men in a wine cellar on the backrest. I do not know what happened to the other chair, but would love to know where it is now.
The other chair was featured in the Wichita Eagle newspaper on 01/27/ 1970 and that owner and my mom exchanged letters about their chairs. My mom recalls Gallo winery wished to purchase the two chairs but my mom wanted to keep it. My understanding is the chair is a few hundred years old. We still have this chair in Dallas, Texas.

Hi. We have a family member with a very similar looking chair, except the back of the chair is a guy smoking a pipe. The entire rest of the chair looking the same. I have been trying to find more information on them. there is a set of 3. One is a rocking chair, one is a chair and the third is a settee. Do you have any other information that you can share about this chair you posted? Thank you!

Hi, Since my original post I have run across two other chairs that look just like ours. They both sold at auctions in the past few years for only $100 or so (not certain I saw final bid). They did not appear to be in good shape. I do not have any better idea as to how old they are, but was surprised to see there were others with the same monk image. Thanks

While researching my own chair, I’ve come across many carved chairs that resemble this with the drinking monk theme carved into the back. They were made circa 1900 by George Arndt, and usually the only marking I’ve seen if any, have only been labels from the store that it was sold in. I hope this helps & gives you some more info to research!
