Hello fellow collectors. For those of you who don't know, I'm a nurse in the UK and it's been a busy couple of weeks compounded on Friday by the Ransomware attack on our hospital. So I thought I would post my lovely Buckle. It was my mums which she was given when she qualified in the 1950's. She doesn't know if it was new when she got it, so perhaps someone can identify the markings if possible. It's very fancy so I don't wear it when clinical, only if in Uniform on management days. Am not sure if Devils Heads are particularly apt on a nurses buckle but my mum said she fell in love with it as soon as she saw it, so am proud to wear it when I can. Enjoy your weekend. X

How amazing is that buckle! So glad you have it. Any marks on it?
    2. vetraio50 vetraio50, 7 years ago
London marks of Charles Engelhard or Charles Edwards .... 1897. A green man ???
    3. Efesgirl Efesgirl, 7 years ago
      Assayed in London.
Date letter looks like 1917. I think the maker is Charles Edwards.

Ooo a Greenman, very popular in England vetraio50, though think the man in the buckle looks a bit more goat like ha ha. Thank you for the info it's great.

Efesgirl, yep Charles Edwards it is though if it's 100 years old I had better stop wearing it. U are amazing at finding out facts and I really, really appreciate it. Mum will have kittens when I tell her !!!

Thanx for the loves love aura, Caperkid, Brunswick, Peasejean55 and roddyq. And yes racer4four I do feel special when I wear it and so glad I went into nursing. I didn't wear it for many years as management days were in mufti but new nursing matrons like us in uniform woohoo. A great excuse to put it on. X

I wondered about the belts in "Call The Midwife"! They come in Series 5. Very similar to yours! Do you know the story behind them?

      Oh wow!

"And here we go again! The long-awaited fifth season of Call the Midwife is off to a great start with the midwives of Nonnatus House looking especially spiffy in their newly updated uniforms. A bit of trivia about those elaborate silver buckles at their waists: parallel to the American tradition of awarding nursing graduates a pin, British midwives were awarded an ornate sterling silver belt buckle upon graduation and it was the only non-standardized thing they could wear on their uniform. Some midwifery schools and hospitals had their own buckle design, which was also an option for midwives on their staffs."

Thanks! I never miss the show - simply the best thing on TV! We get it later than you do here in the USA.

If the belts were only added to the Uniforms in the 1960's, it can't be from 1917.
    13. Celiene Celiene, 7 years ago
Or did they issue them long before then?
    14. Celiene Celiene, 7 years ago
Oh yeah - they go WAY back before then! Yowza - they are works of art!

Am glad you like the show Celine and yes nurses buckles go way back. It's still a tradition, when you qualify, for someone to buy you a Buckle though not many nurses wear dresses these days. Too awkward when moving patients so most of us keep a dress for management days. I wear scrubs so will post my fob watches at some point which I am constantly on the hunt for. Thanks for your great comments. X

I don't think I've heard of the greeen man, but it looks a lot like the north wind. Have seen a lot of objects like chairs with the north wind carved on them and this is what your emblem reminds me of. Wonderful piece you have !

Now that I have seen it again, I may have heard before of the green man. There is such a beautiful detailed filagree look to the buckle. A treasure !

A favourite show of mine as well - Season Six has been and gone here - think I will rewatch.

My first thought was Green Man too; it's a beautiful buckle you are to be congratulated - it's a noble profession.

Thank you Gillian. I don't feel too noble when called in at 3am but wouldn't do anything else x
