Created at Alphonse Cytère's art studio in Rambervillers, Northeast France, sometime between 1916 and 1920. The 'Cytère Rambervillers' mark is impressed on the base along with the 'UNIS France' mark which is a form of registration mark to show that it was made in France.

Cytère was known for creating exciting new iridescent glazes and this gorgeous hound is a particularly good example with petrol-like colors and a high sheen. The smaller original design of this pooch was based on a bloodhound puppy and created by the German sculptor Ludwig Habich in 1899.

Oh my, this piece really pulls me in. The artist captured the "sad hound dog" persona to a T. Makes me want to reach out and pat him on the head and cheer him up a bit. The coloring simply adds to the charm. It seems to droop with him.

The glaze seems to capture the sadness well, a beautiful dog !~
