Okay...so I said no more hand vases...BUT how could I possibly pass on this one, the "mother" of all hand vases?
I never, ever thought I'd get one of these - they're too far out of my budget & also rarely seen here. But thanks to the wonder that is a certain monthly antiques fair, newly resumed after a two - year hiatus, I was able to score this iconic piece of Victorian design for a very modest sum.
The design was registered on October 28, 1864 by James Hadley, the form said to be modeled after his wife's hand.
The hand holds a small amphora shaped vase.
This example is made from Parian porcelain (unglazed) & measures 16 cm tall, 6.3 across the top rim, & 6.5 cm across the base.
There is finely detailed hand painted decoration to the top rim & and a beaded bracelet around the wrist.
Fully marked underneath & in perfect condition.
What a great find, congrats! The amphora has what looks like a Greek decoration with these little spirals or waves. Very nice.

I'm still amazed by the fact I scored this...the seller knew what it was, & even had a print out of the registration details...but also had a low price on it, go figure...
That neatly painted No 11 intrigues me, too...these vases seem to have been made with a variety of painted decorations, so maybe it refers to which decor it has? Just my guess, anyway.
LOL Bernard, I had no intentions of getting any more hand vases, glass or porcelain, but this was too good to resist. I don't feel so bad because I did sell several hand vases earlier in the year...
