Happy 4th Of July!!! This is a oil portrait on board that I found in a local shop. It is not signed and the original owner's name (I think) is on the label affixed to the Back of the painting. It appears to be the original frame.
Measures 36 X 32 in the frame.
Update: It appears that the following info relates to the artist's name on the reverse. I found a catalogue called "The Royal Society of British Artists" Members exhibiting 1893-1910 by Maurice Bradshaw. It lists the exhibitions of Edward Leslie Badham. While he was living at 3 St. Matthews Drive St-Leonards-on-Sea (circa 1910) he exhibited #330 titled "David Walther Esq. M.A. M.B. Ch, B. I understand that the Ch. B. signifies a surgeon (?). He had another exhibition panting in the winter 0f 1910 called "The Mixing Bench" and from all accounts it had a similar label with a No. 1 and the artist's name and address. I am thinking that this has to be this painting. I also understand from the museum that he did paint a few portraits in his lifetime.
Edward Leslie Badham was a local artist and art teacher of some repute. Born in Clapham, Surrey with six siblings, he married Rebecca Cook in 1905, and had an illegitimate daughter with her; Dorothy who was aged 9 at the time of the wedding. Edward was Rebecca's second husband, she going by the surname of 'Gillett' prior to this marriage.
Moving first to Fordwich in Kent by 1905, then to Hastings by 1907 at the latest, he being president of the local arts' club in that year. According to the 1911 Census Badham was recorded as living at 3 St. Matthews Drive; Badham claimed in that Census return to have been married for 16 years but in fact had married Rebecca only six years earlier (this possibly to give some legitimacy to his daughter).
He was unfortunately killed in an air raid which hit his house at 22 Priory Road on the 12th of March 1944, also killing Dorothy May Badham, his only child.

kyra, As always, very good hearing from you and thank you for the nice comment!
Can't read the tag,. what does it say?
Great character in the portrait!
Frame appears to be 20th century, while the painting (copy?) would appear to be much earlier.
scott
scott, I believe that the painting is very old. There has been some in painting on the forehead and crackling throughout.
Celiene, The tag is difficult to read. It has a female's name and address. I cannot decipher the last name. May say St. Louis...not sure.
stunning!!!
SEAN, Thank you!
