There hasn't been much to pick from at the thrifts since the holidays started in late September, but they are finally clearing the shelves of the holiday trappings and getting back to business as usual. I was about to leave Savers yesterday empty handed but I decided to look at the books before I left. I noticed this pitcher on the top shelf by the art books. Someone really went to a lot of trouble to put it way up there and not back where it belonged. The price tag was over the mark and it was really stuck good so I couldn't see the mark until I got it home. The last word is worn but you can make out the word "England" A quick online search pulled up Jackfield ware which is this style of pottery done in black and gold but with red clay. The problem was the SJB mark. So a bit more searching finally turned up Samuel Johnson Ware Burslem Stoke-on-Trent England. While very similar style wise Samuel Johnson Ware is a creme color pottery. They also did very ornate pieces in all colors. The mark dates it between 1887 and 1915. later pieces have Britannia marks. The gilding is in very good shape and the pewter lid is perfect. Not bad for a last minute save. -Mike-

Thanks Bonnie....possibly I mean if they just didn't want it why put it up so high and out of the way, The clerk was there shelving books and would have put it back in the proper dept. anyway. I found it a bit odd so I guess it must have been waiting for me. :)
