i won this on ebay the other day. i thought i might regret the purchase, but i don't. it may be a self-portrait, but i like this man, whoever he is. it's old - from the 1920s to 40s, and very well done, but unsigned. it came in a very dumb/ugly frame so i put it in a nice one i had kicking around. i'll have to take another photo in daylight, because the light just doesn't do it justice here.
Here are some better photos of the painting. It has really grown on me over the years. I'm pretty sure that it is a Poilu - a French soldier from WWI. The moustache and the blue collar with that particular cut are indicative. The back seems to have a painted over painting and there is a pencil sketch of what i think is a soldier too.

thank you Jean123! i'll have to cut down the painting a bit to fit it in the frame, but there's no signature and nothing important will be removed... so... i think it will be okay to do that. any thoughts anyone?
