Spiny, spiky, lumpy, knobbly...Victorian art glass had a craze for "rustic" forms that imitated nature & turned it into something fantastical. I must admit that thorny glass has a place in my heart. It's ugly-beautiful, menacingly pretty, & downright kooky.
First two photos show a variety of pieces in yellows & greens from England & Bohemia. There's a smattering of Kralik & Welz for the devotees out there. The uranium thorn vase on a tree root base was purchased in London in 2003 & I believe it to be by John Walsh Walsh.
Second two photos show pinks, reds, mauve, & blue...by diverse makers including John Walsh Walsh, Stevens & Williams, & others. The particularly odd round vase with wheels for feet is possibly early Loetz...or Harrach.
