I bought this large round mid century glass ceiling shade years ago for $3.00 not knowing at the time it was Murano glass.

I just thought it was so unusual and very different. It has been my kitchen bench, hanger over the topper light where ever I have been and it always attracts a lot of comments, I love it!

It fades from a opalescent top, to clear about half way down, with a large 'dollop' of brown in the centre of the claw shaped bottom. It actually throws a mostly clear light when lit.

    Thank you for looking....:-)

Beautiful, and most unusual! Inky!!! - did you grow the lemons, too?!!!!
    3. inky inky, 12 years ago
Hello miKKoChristmas11, how are you today?....yes!!! :-).. I grow a tree in a large pot outside the kitchen window, handy for that obligatory daily gin and tonic...:-/.. if you look in the last photo the one with the light on, you will juuuuust! see it outside the window, bottom right of shade. It is laden at the moment, I may be able to spare a few for some home made lemonade coming on.....:-)

Hi, Inky! Indeed? - you grew these too? You amaze me! They're stunning. I always wanted to grow lemons and limes, but it is not possible in this climate. I have peach trees and apple trees, and also a flowering cherry and a flowering crabapple tree. Other than that, some tempermental azaleas, some wonderful scented bushes with white flowers (name unknown to me), a crepe myrtle tree, burning bushes, vines, a hot pink rose bush that has taken over much of the garden to the right of the door. However, my main crop is CRABGRASS and miscellaneous weeds. I grew a spectacular giant moonflower vine on my front porch about two years ago. Can you grow moonflowers where you are? The last photo above captures a beautiful vista - is your home surrounded by deep lawns and gardens? It looks like heaven. I commend your gardening, Inky! miKKo

Oh, Inky, your home and the grounds and gardens are wonderful! It looks a lot like I expect Paradise to look like. I am very happy for you, and I thank you very much for the link. Best wishes! miKKo

      I think it was by I. V. R. Mazzega
This beautiful glass sitiing elephant with trunk up was made by I.V.R Mazzega (Industrie Vetrarie Riunite Mazzega) Murano, Venice, Italy (1938 - 1983).
The exact starting date of the glasswork cannot be established. According to Esperia Mazzega, daughter of Romano, it goes back to the early 30s. In 1937 Romano sold the firm to Aureliano Toso and the following year, together with his brothers Gino and Maria, he established the F.lli Mazzega. After the Second World War this name became I.V.R. Mazzega. The glasswork operated mainly as a commissionaire, especially for the Fucina degli Angeli firm, having the best artist and glassblowers of the time, such as: Ermanno Nason, Luigi Scarpa Croce, Aldo Bergamini, Fulvio Bianconi, Carlo Scarpa, Renzo Burchiellaro, Anzolo Fuga, Marc Chagall, Pablo Picasso, Gio' Ponti, Georges Braque and Jean Cocteau. Production stopped in 1983.

There's now a firm called AV Mazzega:

Sorry about the elephant .... Came from the quoted description of an elephant similar to one of my items: the pink dolphin with the pouting lips.

I copied and posted the info on the firm but didn't delete the info about the pink elephant!
      And I haven't had a drink, ....... Yet!
      Off to dinner tonight!
It's a stunning lamp shade that I have admired for years in its various forms.
Yours looks like a traditional fancy frilled shade that has been planted into a sphere! Nice!

Yes!.... sorry I did realize that, but you first link that you gave me, in the animal ornament section I found an elephant which I thought they might have been talking about, at that moment I hadn't seen your posting and realized then it wasn't, sorry for the confusion and thank you for the information, I actually never new who the maker was.....:-)

Wow this is great and your home looks lovely and sunny. Lemon tree outside your window, just sounds wonderful. We don't have anything this year, drought has put all the plants in survival mode or killed them off. Even without the drought I have difficulty with rabbits, and my own brown thumb.
A lemon tree out my window...my new novel title ; )

and thank you amberrose your nice complement, your right we do have a bright sunny home but we have made it that way. I don't have a brown thumb I just make a lot of work for myself, but worth it when summer comes around and looks beautiful. I am sorry to hear about the drought we do read about it here and I do think about you all there, wishing you some of this rain that we get allot off. We also suffer badly from rabbits too and yes a nice title for a novel........:-)

There's something about the 1920-1950s that is so missing in contemporary styling.
      Great buy! Sigh...
