    I enjoy looking for ‘go alongs’ that compliment my collection of vintage wood and brass cameras. Residing in a Minneapolis suburb, I couldn’t pass up this rare image of the 1884 Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) parade in Minneapolis. The Eighteenth Annual National Encampment stopped here in July 1884 and returned to St. Paul in September 1896.

    The 4” x 6” picture was taken by the St. Paul (MN) Schlattman Bros. studio. The image can be dated to the 1884 Eighteenth Encampment because Schlattman Bros. was only in operation from 1883–88.

    Although the image is a bit faded, blurry horse drawn trolleys and lots of interesting advertising can be seen; including the venerable arms maker, Winchester.
