This is a sixth plate ambrotype of a pair of sisters.

Each sports a nicely tinted green dress and a red tinted coral necklace.

I really like professionally tinted images from this early era of photography!

They almost look like twins. Must be the dresses and they must be close in age. Actually the one with the more rounded face almost looks Native American???

I really like the hand tinting on this. This would have made a fabulous stereo pair if the photographer or client had desired it. - Rob

Thanks rob-- if they were stereos you would probably be the one sharing! You have some great ones in your collection.

Bit grumpy aren't they? Lovely photo - the colouring is great.

No wonder one is grumpy looking..they sat for a long time for exposure geezzzz

    7. scottvez scottvez, 8 years ago
This ambrotype would have had an exposure time of only a few seconds.

They are not grumpy.just serious: we are used to people smiling for photographs but it's a relatively recent American "trend".
