Kuniaki Kuroki is a Japanese glass artist considered a living national treasure, and has a had a huge impact on Japanese glass art.
Born in 1945 he is still making glass at his studio Glass Art Kuroki, although it appears much of his time is spent mentoring younger artists in the studio.
Kuroki has really focused on using Japanese aesthetics from the Rimpa movement in his glass, as shown here with the colours inlaid in the gold band. This form is also typical of his style, although this one is considerably simpler than some of his other pieces.
Kuroki is also a master glass cutter and although he does little cutting now, he was involved in the renewal of Satsuma Kiriko in the 1990s.
This is my largest piece of Kuroki work and I'm happy to have it.
Signed, typically, Kuniaki to the base.
Circa 2000, height 15.5cm.
