    Hello everyone!!
I posted this a few years ago, but felt inspired by our newest CW member BMWFAN64 to post it again. I bought this 1975 BMW 2002 in 1993 and it was a total rust bucket. But, after three, yes three, long years of really hard work, I finally completed restoration in the Spring of 1996.
My friend and I did a ground up restoration on this one. We stripped everything down to the frame and worked our way up. Sandblasted and repainted the chassis , rebuilt the engine and transmission, replaced all of the rusted body panels (rocker panels, quarter panels, fender cowl supports and even the trunk floor). Did some serious repairs to the rear shock towers, re-routed the sunroof drain hoses out the rear fender wells, replaced the sunroof cables, every rubber seal, chrome trim, installed the original steel wheels and trim rings, replaced the carpet and even the perforated leatherette seat covers. Miraculously, the head liner was in great condition. I even had the original dashboard clock repaired. Oh, I even found a used steering worm gear for $50 and replaced the worn out worm gear. Not even 1/2" of play was left in the steering.

I was able to locate the original Atlantik Blue enamel paint and repainted the car. It took me several months to locate the correct paint for this one. BMW only issued these cars with what was referred to as "Candy" colors. So, no fancy metallic paints or clear coat on these. 1976 was the last year these were made and it was replaced by the BMW 320i.

Under the hood, I replaced the original Solex single barrel carburetor with a Weber two barrel and a K&N intake air filter. I even was able to locate, and replace, the original decals in the engine compartment. Oh, and this car even retained it's original tool kit that BMW issued with the car when it was new.

I entered this car in a BMWCCA car show, in the Spring of 1996, and I won the 2002 class that year. A very proud moment indeed!! I still have that little marble plaque sitting on my desk as a reminder of the good ole days:)

Anyway, kids came along and my priorities seemed to change and I sold it. The kids are grown now and oh how I wish I had this car back. I miss her SO much!

Thanks for stopping and having a look at my (former) classic BMW!!

    Scott

I understand the kids arrival & departure. There are a few cars I wish I held on to, but wouldn't trade them for the kids (most of the time, that is). 1956 Chevy, 1957 Chevy, 1965 Chevelle SS, 1977 Corvette, just a few.

Thanks MALKEY!! Glad to bring back a good memory for you. My dream was to own a BMW M5 (but I would take an M3), but the budget just didn't call for it. Thank you my friend!!

      Dave,
I'm glad I'm not the only one out there that misses the past cars they sold:) I wouldn't be able to touch another 2002, in this condition, for under $40K.

I've always been a diehard 'blue oval' fan when it comes to old cars, but the make/model truly doesn't matter the slightest bit when it comes to recognizing and applauding the *enormous* amount of hard work it takes to return ANY ONE of 'em from 'nearly dead' to 'showroom new', like you've shown here. I'm sorry with you that you don't have the car anymore, but trust that its current owner still enjoys the fruits of your labors like you did. :-)

Thanks very much AnythingObscure!! I really loved this car and I still remember the serial number of the car, 2381972. It was a lot of fun to restore and even more fun to drive.

Thanks iggy!! Very much appreciated. I love European cars and my wife and sons are all huge Honda fans. The only American made vehicle we have in our garage is my company vehicle, which is a Ford Escape. I spend most of my drive time in the Ford.

    20. jscott0363 jscott0363, 6 years ago
Thanks Karen!! They're very rare to come by anymore. There were only about 130,000 produced from 1968 thru 1976. Few are left on the roads today. But, it's always a treat to see one.

I had a buddy in high school that was a crazy man.... I mean truly certifiable..... After high school, in 1971 he bought a new 2002 in orange. We went for a ride one night on the highway through the middle of town. My first ride in his new car..... We had smoke a couple of joints and were listening to some tunes..... I lived in a suburb of Seattle, so the road was 2 lanes each way.

He got the car up to about 80 miles and hour, looked over at me, smiled, and said "Watch this!!". With his hands off the steering wheel, he locked up the brakes, and we cam to a screeching halt on the freeway in an almost perfectly straight line..... At the time they were introduced, they were mechanical marvels, especially for the money..... Great car... I bet you miss it..... I know I would.....
    29. jscott0363 jscott0363, 6 years ago
Cool story welzebub!! I've read that BMW was not doing so well financially and then they brought out the 2002 in 1968. The car went over so well that it saved them financially. These were really great cars. They were a bit pricey though. When the average American made car cost $3500, these were selling upward of $6500. One of my fellow BMW enthusiast had a 1969 2002tii that had over 600,000 miles on it and it was his daily driver. Still running great! Yes, I miss this car and was very foolish to have sold it when I did.

Very cool MALKEY!! Actually, this one is what BMW called Atlantik, which was more of a Midnight Blue. But, it does sort of appear black in the photos though.

Nice one. I always wanted a tii! There used to be a company in Wisconsin? Michigan? that specialized in completely restoring tii BMWs for their customers. I settled for buying a brand new 1984 VW GTI and had it for 18 years before it finally became time to either restore it or let it fade away. Instead, I gave to a coworker who promised to restore it and then proceeded to part it out. AH! Still miss my GTI (poor man's tii). I think I had about 350K miles on it, not sure as I broke a few speedometer cables. They were great cars, too.

      kwqd,
Thanks very much!! I also owned a 1985 318i and a 1986 325e. I loved all of my Bimmers!! I plan to retire in a couple years and my goal is to have another project car. I’d like an older Porsche 911, another BMW or maybe even a VW Kathman Ghia.
    47. kwqd kwqd, 12 months ago
Love the Karmann Ghia! As I recall, Porsche designed that one. Hard for older folks to get in and out of, though.... Retirement ROCKS!
