Recently, I had one of those "holy moly" moments. This pair of vases came up for auction but were unidentified. I immediately recognized them as a pair of highly sought after "Occhi" vases designed by Tobia Scarpa for Venini circa 1960. Although it appears like a simple design, it requires a highly skilled glassblower to achieve the Occhi (eyes) pattern. Each square is a clear and red murrine. They are laid out on a marver in the desired pattern, rolled and fused to clear glass while at the same time keeping the murrine properly aligned. I guess this makes up for those pieces that I had to have and over-payed! As always, thanks for looking.
