    TassieDevil
    (175 items)

    Hello everyone.

Have had this brooch for years, bought at an antique fair in Hobart. Perhaps made from pinchbeck, with the original piece of woven fabric in the glass locket back. The picture part of the brooch measures about one inch accross

I thought I would have a lot of trouble getting a decent picture of the man in this, but I think he is pretty clear. I deliberately took the second picture as this is how he looks in the cabinet most of the time, and gave me the creeps for quite some time. He is still pretty interesting I think!! I have always thought of this man as being American for some reason, probably isn't lol!

I hope I am right in calling the picture a Daguerreotype....dating it 1839-49. If not, I would be very happy to be corrected!!

Hope you enjoy seeing this brooch. Thanks, Judy

In my opinion he is rather stern looking, not creepy. Very interesting piece!!!

He looks like a Tasmanian to me Judy!! I don't mean that badly - just as an early settler sort.
    5. martika martika, 8 years ago
I think that woven fabric might be that mans woven hair, so maybe it was a mourning jewellery.
    6. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
      Wow! Nice brooch, Judy!
I don't think it is woven hair, Martika, too thin, they used fabric from loved ones costume too in these times.
Scottvez will confirm for daguerreotype, it seems to be a photo on silver sheet!

Hi Martika, that's great that you don't find him creepy thanks, I love to hear your thoughts on my items!
    8. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
Oh Karen!!! I laughed out loud when I read your comment!!! could be....wouldn't that be great, love him to be a reformed convict!!!! Thanks.....
    9. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
Martika it could possibly be a morning or sentimental brooch I agree, but I have to go with Kyra on the back piece being fabric not hair :-) Thank you
    10. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
mourning not morning!!! didn't spell check that very well did I lol

Creepy or not, I really like this. I love these old pictures fro the 1800's.
    13. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
Thanks Scott, I really like it too, there is just something really eerie about it that bothers me! We have a lot of really old pictures as well, just love them!

I am a huge fan of "creepy", and this is right up my alley!
    15. scottvez scottvez, 8 years ago
      Nice brooch.

It certainly looks to be a daguerreotype and your description of the image would support that as well.

Daguerreotypes were around through about 1860 in the US. I'd put your image toward the end of the daguerreotype era.

The bright gold brooch would not be indicative of mourning jewelry.

Watch leaving this piece out for an extended period in strong light-- the image will gradually fade away.

      Thanks for sharing.

The pictures compared, that is pretty creepy! You're right! Maybe he's a vampire ;) Very cool tho.

Thanks Bonnie, I don't do creepy or horror or vampires or any of those things!!! Doesn't take much for me to have nightmares!!!
    19. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
Hi Scottvez, thanks very much for taking a look. Oh good, a bit later time frame than I had guessed! and probably just a sentimental piece too. That's great and thank you very much for your help Scott, much appreciated!
Oh yes, I always keep it well out out of any light.....would hate it to fade! Thanks again.

I am really enjoying the comments :)))
About the mourning jewellery : they were not always black. If you google them, lots of gold coloured will pop up.
    24. TassieDevil TassieDevil, 8 years ago
Thanks Martika, glad you have enjoyed this post .....we have been having a bit of fun with it!!!
Regarding the mourning or not.....I don't really know....so if it has an inscription etc with the usual black decoration, with or without hair or photo, I call it mourning, and if it has just a photo with or without hair, I call it a sentimental piece!! Hope that makes sense......makes it easier for me anyway lol....right or wrong.....

I'm with you on sentimental/mourning distinction :-) though it can be tricky sometimes...
Here is some of mine, considering them rather sentimental, except the one with pearls which symbolism is tears.

Thanks Pascale, yes it is tricky isn't it.....your pieces are lovely and yes I reckon the pearls (for tears) one would be mourning for sure! Hayden's "Art of Mourning" site is really great too...

When we buy these pieces, (on line) we can really only go on the seller's discription, which is usually that it is a mourning piece, and then make up our own minds later.....a bit like every black brooch and every picture brooch is a mourning piece!!!!
    27. kyratango kyratango, 8 years ago
Yep Judy! All black jewellery is qualified as mourning, and all woven baskets are "native American"! ;-)
