I grabbed this one up in the early morning when I saw it freshly listed at auction with a Buy it Now. It was advertised as an inkwell. The ground color is Rubin, with beautiful cobalt papillon applied over it. The silver overlay is marked "Sterling" on both the lid and body of the piece. There is no shoulder on the inside of the rim, so it is not an inkwell, though the size of it is about what I would expect for an inkwell. And there is no wear on the top of the rim as if an insert were once suspended from it. The opening at the rim is only 1 1/8 inches across. We now know that this is a pill box, thank you LoetzDance for this information.

I've got to learn to get on ebay earlier and hit it late at night too. I miss tons of stuff. My good friend who also collects antique Russian Icons has several that I never even saw because he hit ebay about 6am !

I used to wake up every night at about 3 AM, like clockwork. I would get online and look at new listings for about a half hour, then go back to bed. I do have a couple of nice pieces from these early morning visits to eBay, so if I only get one or two really good things a year, it's still worth the trouble.

It's a pill box. I have one exactly like it. PN 85-4051. Great snag, I paid $650 for mine just a couple of years back.

Fantastic! Thank you for that information, that's just what I needed to know. All the Loetz inkwells I have seen had wide bases (for obvious reasons, so it wouldn't tip) and this jar would go over in a second.

Beautiful! I bet it's even prettier in person
