I just purchased some great African American images from the mid to late 1860s.

This particular example shows a beautiful woman and contains some tinting.

No photographer information on this example.

It's so amazing that so many of these photos have made it through all these year and look so good. I'm sure you could tell me the meaning or benefit of the photographer signing the piece. Were there very few photographers then? I imagine so and also I'm thinking the equipment itself was a pretty penny back then.

I'm asking about that particularly because I have some old photos as well. They are of a large family from the 1800's through to the early 1900's. Without having them on hand, I'm thinking they were somewhere around...yes, Delaware. I tried to locate the name on the photos around that area and nothing came up. Do you find it difficult to locate any family or pinpoint their area?

Just so you understand, I ended up with what seemed like the whole family's history of photos. Along with other belongings in a steamer trunk. They appeared by their belongings, well to do. There was even a certificate of Ophthalmology for one member of the family. That family member was driving a horse and buggy, had a long beard and wearing a suit and top hat. I still have these packed away, the photo of the little girl I posted (I will bring the link back here) is of that family. I always thought it would be nice to return all those photos, I just don't think they were intended to be lost or tossed. I've probably asked you about this before...It just hit me again as something that I would like to do.

Wow, I posted her 3 years ago!

She's from the family I am speaking about. Don't you think it would be kind of cool for someone to randomly come up and give you your family's history back to you, possibly that you were never even aware of!

Lots of photographers out there-- it would seem that by the Civil War most towns (even small ones) had a photographer or more.

Backmarks are useful in determining location and also assist in dating an image.

Reuniting images and families is a nice thought, but not something I actively pursue.

      Good luck!
