At the Wenty monthly market last Sunday I saw this piece by Saara Hopea. The dealer had tried to clean the item but had given up. But from her efforts I could see that she had given up too quickly. Under the grime was clear glass where she had been able to get to .... I just needed some way of getting through the opening at the top.
At home I found a pair of my old reading glasses and an arm from them could be manipulated to get most of the grime off the walls. Mind you I still need to do a bit more work on this one.
The grime of 50 years in the air had been trapped within the glass bubble.
Saara Hopea (1925-1984).
I had been wanting a nice item by Saara Hopea and this one has fallen from the tree into my hands.
The 'Omena' or 'Apple' had been designed by Saara Hopea in 1958 according to sources on the net. This one is signed S. Hopea, Nuutajärvi. Notsjö 61. I have seen a couple on the net. One was signed with the number 60 and yet another 69. At this stage I do not know if the number is a year of production or a limited edition number.
I love the form and the applied lilac line and blotch.
